Badware completely removed

At StopBadWare, you can see that this site is no longer being reported as having badware. Google Safe Browsing says the same thing. The badware that was placed on this site without anyone's knowledge (likely by an automated computer program) has been been stopped by my hosting service, which reported, "... as this hack was done using injection we put some rules in place to not allow injections on the file anymore so anyone trying this will just get an error now." I also upgraded my WordPress installation.

If any of you have to deal with a badware problem on your websites, here are the best links I could find.

The best website explaining how to fix your website is http://25yearsofprogramming.com/blog/20071223.htm

And the site that found all the malware on my site was http://wam.dasient.com/wam/

The second best was http://www.unmaskparasites.com/

Site Problems

There are only 2 posts today for registered users. I spent most of the day purging my site of malware. It apparently gained access to my site through my WordPress blog, which I seldom use. I was on version 2.7, when the attack hit. I upgraded to the current version, 2.8.2 and put myself on an email list for upgrade notifications, then I went through every directory on my site and searched my files for any signs of the infection. I can find no trace of it remaining on my site but it may take weeks before Google, Firefox and stopbadware.org clear my site. This has been the worst case of vandalism I've suffered in more than 10 years.

Few entries today

A customized installation of an appliance in a place it wasn't designed to fit took all of the time I had for posting entries, tonight. My apologies. Regular posting will resume at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.

No Malware on This Site

You know, I run one of the cleanest sites on the Internet. This discussion board collects the barest amount of voluntarily submitted information to create user accounts and it uses cookies solely for the purpose of making access easier for users. I don't track any information, I don't collect any information, I don't use or sell any information for any purpose except to run this website for free. I don't sell anything and I don't advertise anything. There's nothing on this site that comes from another site with an attempt to sell you something or to get something from you.

So, naturally, some miscreant who doesn't like this site apparently has reported it as being infected with malware. That's an easy way to censor sites you don't like. Simply report them as being infected.

I have run virus scans from my hosting service on my site. It's clean. AVG security scans report my site is safe. My hosting service runs the latest security software. In over 10 years of running this website, it has never been infected. It has never passed on any information about users to anyone for any purpose. No one can predict the future, but at no time in the past 10 years has anyone ever been exposed to malware from my website.

Broken links on this site
http://tinyurl.com/o3x7gu or http://preview.tinyurl.com/o3x7gu

When prudence dictated that I make the majority of the contents on my website available to registered users only, the change broke many links to this discussion board. It is not feasible for me to repair all these links on every webpage. There are thousands of them. The best I can do is to update the broken links upon request. All of these links require a free registration to this discussion board. I deeply regret taking this board private, but I had no practical alternative.

How you can fix a broken link

Links to this board may have been broken in one of two ways.

1. If the link has "messages" in it, substitute that word with "read.php?file=".

2. If the link has "tpc=2" in it, substitute that word with "tpc=8722".

Remember, you must be logged in as a registered user to connect to the links.

The server that hosts this website crashed this weekend. I restored 2 days of lost entries. Regular updates will begin around 5 p.m. on Monday, May 5.

If you began or completed the registration process this past weekend, chances are your information was lost and you'll have to register again. I'm very sorry for the hassle. If you registered for an account but can't log in, that's a good indication that you'll have to re-register, unless you forgot your password.
