Some schools cheer lifting of state bus mandate

Last month, lawmakers approved the School Bus Mandate Relief Act, allowing districts to reduce the number of seats for students if those seats are not used.

Prior to the new law, districts were required to provide a seat for every student who was eligible for the bus, even if students used other means of transportation.

Now, seats can be reduced if there's a consistent pattern of students who don't ride the bus. A school board must have a documented history of the number of riders in each of the preceding three years to pinpoint a trend of empty seats.
