By KRISTI GRAY / New Zealand Press
22 June 2006
from Punishing/Billing Parents for Student/Parent Misconduct
Irate parents who abuse teachers in front of their students could now be fined $1000.
The increased fine has been welcomed by teachers and principals, who say aggressive parents are a growing problem.
An amendment to the Education Act has increased the fine for [...]

TRIMMING SCHOOL BUDGETS NOT EASY

Dr. Charles Cummins / Report Card on Education
Schenectady, NY: 2006-06-04

School budgets keep going up and voters in some communities keep voting them down. When this happens, school administrators have a problem. If they agree to trim the proposed budget, voters will feel it clearly contained excesses and understandably wonder if even more cuts are possible. [...]

Inflation Outpaces Teacher Salary Growth in More Than 40 States

If the NEA were a geyser, Old
Faithful wouldn't even be in the running for blowing off hot air. Today's
blast of steam asserts that teacher salaries aren't rising as fast as inflation.
It's the result--or contrivance--of an over-simplistic and flawed methodology.
If you think the most powerful union in the U.S. must be capable of increasing
teacher salaries at least as fast as inflation, you're right. Find out why in
this commentary.

Home-schooling in the modern world

Over at
Dilbert.Blog, a reader observed "that many ... 'arguments' aren't
suppose to be logical." They "are suppose to appeal to emotion and
create an emotional reaction." Consequently, rationality is irrelevant. In
the following commentary, Diane Glass provides a perfect example of this
strategy in opining "homeschooling evil, public schools good." It's truly an icon of intellectual bigotry.

Flattening Instruction

In "Flattening Instruction," David DeSchryver (The Doyle Report) makes arguments against modernizing education that are so unbelievably bad that one is forced to consider whether that wasn't his true intent. For example, he says, "An educator’s work is unique." But, it is precisely because an educator's work should be unique that computer-delivered and/or outsourced instruction is imperative. Why should every student in the classroom be getting the same instruction at the same pace with the same homework from a teacher who may not have the information, skills or interest in what matters most to each student?

‘Child-centric’ schools

"The old formula of 'Stand and Deliver' — a teacher before a class giving kids facts they’ll be required to regurgitate — is hopelessly outdated. Teachers are no longer 'masters' ... when kids, from their desktops, have instant access to every library or museum on the planet.

Maryland Test Supplants National Measures

The trend in public schools is to stop giving national norm-referenced tests and rely almost exclusively on state exams to judge the quality of education. In this article, Maryland schools say they don't need the national exams, but I say the parents need them! As a bonus, a MD administrator, taking a dig at North Dakota, says MD doesn't need no stinkin' comparisons to ND to know if its schools are doing the job. As it turns out, ND ranked 4th and MD ranked 32nd in overall performance on the 2005 NAEP exams. See why parents need national comparisons?

Urgency. And candor

At a recent major education summit in Albany, NY, equitable funding and pre-kindergarten were hailed as cures for inadequate progress in achieving academic excellence. Never mind that 100% of NY schools already spend more per pupil than the national average--most exceeding the national average by more than 40%. Never mind that the effects of kindergarten, let alone pre-k, disappear by the end of 2nd grade and that our 4th-graders do well on international tests while our high-schoolers do poorly. The pathway to greater prosperity is more money and pre-k. No need to retool schools by making more effective use of technology.

What passes for education leadership today is deplorably unimaginative, anachronistic and the living embodiment of absurdity. The elixirs and potions offered as cures appeal only to the ignorant and the desperate. They ought to be banned by the FDA.

Marketing & Advocacy by Public Schools

Marketing and advocacy by public schools is on the rise. Brought on by
competition from charter schools and facilitated by school districts, school
board associations and union dues, educators are becoming more aggressive in
using mass psychology to protect and promote their multi-million dollar
enterprises. Sometimes, schools and unions are open about their positions--like
in California on Props 74 and 75. Other times, educators
pose as neutral citizens, cloaking their identity through websites and foundations. This article takes a look at public school marketing and
advocacy and regretfully concludes that the public can expect more tax dollars
to be spent on these in the future.
